This year the Annual Latrobe City Bocce Classic 2006 Mixed Triples
Championship was once again held at the Italian Australian Sporting and
Social Club of Gippsland. The three day event, commencing 30th June
drew a record number of 72 bocce players from Metropolitan Melbourne
through Gippsland to North East Victoria. What drew the players to this
region was not only the well known local attractions, but also the
opportunity to win substantial prize money.
The tournament was
officially opened on the Friday night by the Latrobe region Mayor, Lisa
Price. The Mayor, bowled the opening bowl in the Bocce Drome in front
of all the players and official sponsors.
The Club was proud to
again be the venue for this Championship. The success of this Classic
must again go to the organisers Sally Fava Secretary and Tony Paolini
President and their Club’s Bocce committee.
Morwell Bocce club
had three of their four teams go through to the quarter finals.
Surprisingly, for the first time only one metropolitan team got through
to the semi-finals. In the final a close game saw Shepparton beat
Kyabram for the title and the top prize money, while the Veneto Club
beat Morwell for the third and fourth positions. Best and fairest for
the tournament was Nick Albanese from the Morwell Bocce Club.
The weekend proved such a success that many of the players have already booked in for next year.
The
Bocce Federation of Australia has nominated this club as the host for
the 2007 Australian Junior Bocce Open, the first venue ever outside the
metropolitan areas. This is a recognition of the great work by the Club
Bocce committee in the training and development of junior players. The
event programmed for early April 2007 will attract Australian and
international junior players. The Bocce Federation of Australia
executive Raymond Cher President, Frank Funari Secretary and Tony
Biancacci, National Coaching Director met with the Latrobe City events
manager Wendy Hrynyszyn, the Victorian Bocce Secretary Michael Pascuzzi
and the Club Bocce committee led by Sally Fava to commence preliminary
planning for the event.
