BOCCE AT THE THE AUSTRALIAN MASTERS GAMES IN ADELAIDE
Bocce joined with 51 other sports in celebrating the participation of 10,000 mature men and women in the 13th Australian Masters Games in Adelaide. Bocce’s contribution to the Games was the organization of six competitions over its first three days, Friday 7th to Sunday 9th October. The Veneto Club located in Beverley was the venue for five of the events - the men’s and women’s singles, the men’s and women’s doubles and the mixed triples competition. The other mixed doubles competition, with simple Aussie Bocce rules, was played on grass in the city centre at Victoria Square.
The outright sensation was the home town women’s champion Delfina Gallio, who won every competition she played in, the Singles, the Doubles and the Mixed Triples. The other special result was the three grandmothers, Antonia DeMarchi, Delfina Gallio and Adriana Simionato winning gold in the Mixed Triples Open. Also let’s not forget the performance of 84 years young, Giuseppe Sestito with Silver in the Mixed Triples and a Bronze in the Green Bowls Mixed Doubles.
Twenty four players, mainly from South Australia, but also Victoria enjoyed the friendly atmosphere generated by the organizing body, the Bocce Federation of Australia would like to acknowledge the contribution of the South Australian Federation and also the Veneto Club in putting its Bocce Drome at our disposal for the Masters.
Bocce Federation of Australia’s Frank Funari, the co coordinator for the event would like to thank the many people who contributed to the success of this event. Thanks to Mirella Mancini, Roberta Maher, Rita Fedele, Helen Ganeo, Chief Referee Gennaro Galasso and the South Australian Junior Bocce Players Declan Fedele and Alec Ganeo as Assistant Tournament Directors. Thanks also to Life Be In It, for their support at Victoria Square.
