AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR BOCCE OPEN 2011 - 16th and 17th April
Competition for the titles should be keen between the teams, with each team being supported by international experienced competitors. In fact, five of the nine junior athletes have been blooded at World competition level.
The Victorians are the favourites. Nick Cooper and Kelly Sperne from the Latrobe Valley won four of last year’s Australian Junior titles and will again defend them. Nick will be defending his Bowl Throw and Precision Throw titles, while Kelly will compete again in the traditional Singles and Doubles titles. In addition, Nick Penney will again be partnering Kelly in defending the Doubles title. Ivan Pepe has improved through participating is the bocce training camps earlier this year. They will all be supported by three experienced coaches in Frank Fava, Gino Montuoro and Santo Pascuzzi.
South Australians, Alec Ganeo and Declan Fedele, have been fast tracked through peak competition. They competed in last year’s nationals and then represented Australia in the World titles in Croatia. While relatively new on the national competition circuit, they have a player of 40 years experience in Gaetano Gallio as their mentoring coach for this competition.
New South Wales will be expecting their team of Daniel Samsa, Tristan Giacometti and Liam Spagnolo to be up in the medal count, considering the improvements seen since the previous year. Particularly Daniel Samsa who has consistently improved, through participating in the four training workshops held this year. International Coach Louis Magajna says that he has high hopes for his players.
