Australian Bocce Raffa
Triples Open 2015
New South Wales Victorious again!
It was a tournament of surprises! Previous champions were
knocked out in the quarter finals – setting the stage for a contest between two
old rival States Victoria and NSW! The
smart money was on the talented local team with the benefit of three strong
shooters in their team but it was not to be – the Sydney Marconi team of Rocco
Mancini, Santa Bruzzese and Silvio Bruzzese outclassed the favourites Frank
Fava, Diane Penney and Nicholas Penney on time-limit 7 – 4!
The 8th Australian
Raffa Triples Open Championship attracted 18 teams from around Australia vying
for the $3,000 in prize money! The popular two day event is held each year over
the Australia Day weekend! This year the
championship was held on 24-25 January 2015 at the purpose built bocce arena Italian
Australian Social and Sporting club of Morwell and co-sponsored by LaTrobe City
and Bocce Australia.
Coming into the competition last year’s winners from
Sydney’s King Tomislav Club - George Milic, Beppo Maras and Milenco Zegupa were
the outright favourites! But their plans
for a back-t-back win were scuttled by Victorian veteran Gino Montuoro and his
two novice partners, Marcella Giacomin and Tony Coviello - whose stunning
performance caused the biggest upset of the tournament knocking out the Sydney
siders in the quarter finals!
The finalists in this championship will now go on to compete
for selection to represent Australia at the prestigious World Singles Raffa Bocce Titles (Women, Men and Under 21
categories) to be held at the international Bocce Centre in Rome, Italy between the 18th and 25th
April, 2015!
The Bocce Federation of Australia congratulates the Italian
Australian Sporting and Social Club of Morwell and in particular the Club’s
Bocce subcommittee, the Tournament Director Frank Funari and the lead sponsor
the Latrobe City, for the successful staging of this Championship!
