Media Release

AUSTRALIAN BOCCE CHAMPIONSHIP

30th May to the 2nd June 2014

McLaren Vale – SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The 44th Senior Bocce Championship and 19th Women’s Bocce Championship this year will be a winner!

The Australian Bocce Championships this year has attracted 19 internationals, amongst the 78 bocce athletes, contesting these twelve titles. Players from all states and representative regions (Burdekin, Bundaberg, LaTrobe Valley, McLaren Vale and regions of Victoria’s North East Victoria), will compete over four days, 30th May to 2nd June 2014, at the McLaren Vale Club Bocce complex.

The men will be competing in 7 medal events. The traditional Singles, Doubles, Triples, followed by the specialised Bowl Throw, Precision and Progressive Throw competitions. Whilst the women will be targeting the traditional Singles, Doubles, Triples as well as the ‘open section’ of the more challenging Bowl/Throw and Precision Throw events.

What look for: rising stars, Under 25’s Tristan Giacometti and Daniel Samsa, stepping up from the Junior Championships three months ago each taking away four titles, will be forces to be reckoned with in these specialised events. The unknown factor in the Under 35’s, is Louie Rohan, former 5000 metre Commonwealth Games runner who is participating in the gruelling running Progressive Throw event. Victoria NEBA’s Tony Borrelli, last year’s winner of two titles matched by a great performance at the World Championship in Argentina, is revved up for these titles. The consistent Victorian Metro captain Jim Coviello will point his team to medal wins, just as he did in the recent My Chemist Epping Cup. Queensland’s Bundaberg veteran (20 years participation) Lou Masotti will ward off newcomers for a back to back win!

Amongst the women, the international Queenslander, dominating Barbara Jones, will be looking to maintain her 2013 Doubles, Women’s Bowl Throw and Women’s Precision Throw titles. She will be challenged by some of the most experienced players of recent years. The Victorian NEBA team led by Maria Greco and the South Australian McLaren Vale team captained by the aggressive Vicky Vasarelli will put teams under pressure.

Preliminary Competition commences on Friday the 30th May at 10.15 am and continues through ‘till Monday 2nd June at 6 pm. The finals of most events will be contested on the Monday, finishing up with the exciting Progressive Throw at 5.45pm!

The Championships are organised by the Bocce Federation of Australia with the support of the South Australian Bocce Federation and our host club, the McLaren Vale Bocce Club.
